Gifts For Chihuahuas – Getting Ready For Christmas

Gifts for ChihuahuasAlmost, everyone enjoys Christmas. We enjoy buying our love one gifts and making stocking for them. Our little fur babies are usually on our list to buy for as well.

I hope to give you some ideas for gifts for chihuahuas. You would want to buy things that not only will the dog enjoy, but that will be good for their health. I guess in a few extra treats for Christmas would not hurt anything either. Just remember too much of a good thing will upset our dog’s stomach just like it does ours.

Fill Those Stockings

Some of us like to include our pets when it comes to making up stockings. Gifts for ChihuahuasBut what would be good to put in their stockings? I think that small chew toys would fit into a stocking. These are good for cleaning the teeth, too. I would suggest nylon or rubber chew toys. They are washable and durable.

Small plush squeaky toys or small balls would also fit nicely in the stocking. These could be used to help feel up the bottom of the stocking. This will give your chihuahua something to keep him/her busy while you visit with others or open your on gifts.

Another thing you can do is to buy a stocking that is already made; it has the toys and treats already in it. This the easy way to do it if you are a last minute shopper or run out of ideas.

Wrapping It Up

Gift for ChihuahuasSome dogs love tearing up paper and unwrapping their gifts. This can be so much fun to watch and the dog seems to get so excited. Our pets are like having extra children in the house. They enjoy getting new things too.

You can buy gift sets to wrap up. You can find some with just toys in them. Others have treats for your pet as well. Some of these gift sets come in boxes; so it will make it easy for you to wrap. I found some of these gift sets on Amazon.

There is other gift sets do not come in a box to wrap. These also have a variety of toys that come in them. All the gift sets have a different number of items in them. You can choose how much you want to spend and still get something that your dog will enjoy.

New Clothes

Everyone likes getting something new to wear at Christmas. This is another Christmas idea. Does your dog need a new coat or sweater? Maybe, you would just like to buy them something cute to wear around the house on the Gifts for Chihuahuaschilly days.

You can get festive with a Christmas sweater or buy a jumpsuit or overall outfit. The overall outfit looks cute but I think it is kinda of funny too.

Christmas is a great excuse to buy a new clothing for your pet

Gifts for ChihuahuasOther Ideas

It can also be fun just to buy the items that are not needed. There are cute little charms you can buy that goes on your pets collar or harness. You can also find bows, hats and bow ties that would look adorable. I also found some cute bandannas.

Do not forget you can also find cute socks for the holiday season. There is also socks, shoes, or boots. In some places shoes or boots are recommended because of the cold temperatures.

Enjoy Christmas

Whether you decide to go all out for your pet for Christmas or just pick them up a treat. I hope you consider some of the ideas that I have suggested in this post. I hope everyone will have a safe and great Christmas.

Senior Dog Dementia -It Does Exist

Senior Dog DementiaI never thought about a dog having dementia;until after a good friend of mine lost her dog to dementia that was almost 18 years. It never occurred to me that a senior dog dementia even existed. Now that I know about it, I want to make others are aware of it as well.

This also known as Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD). This is similar to Alzheimer in people. There is a physical and chemical change in the brain. This time in your dog’s life can be very hard on you and your pet.

What Age?

Senior dog dementia usually start in dogs older than ten years of age. That puts chihuahuas and a lot of other smaller breeds in the category of dogs that can get the condition.

Most of my dogs are over ten years old now. So, I have started paying closer attention to their behavior. Up to 50% of dogs over the age of 11 and about 68% of dogs by the age 15 starts showing some signs of dementia.

What are the Symptoms

  • Becomes lost in familiar places; such as around the home or backyard
  • Becomes trapped behind familiar furniture or in room corners
  • Has trouble finding or using doors and negotiates using stairs
  • Does not respond to his/her name or familiar commands
  • Becomes withdrawn and unwilling to play, go for walks, or even go outside
  • Gets to the point of not recognize or is startled by family members or toys
  • Frequently trembles or shakes, either while standing or lying down
  • Paces or wanders aimlessly throughout the house or in the yard
  • Frequently has accidents in the house, regardless of the frequency he/she goes outside
  • Sleeps more during the day and less at the night
  • Stares at walls or out into space
  • Is startled by interior lighting, or the TV
  • Seeks less and less of your attention, praise, and play
  • He/she is hesitant to take treats, drink fresh water, or eat fresh foodSenior Dog Dementia

Your pet will not show all of these signs. There may just be a couple of the signs that shows up. The dog will get where he/she is scared of the people that he/she has lived with all of their life.

Other Conditions That It Could Be

  • Advanced arthritis could cause decreased activity and hesitation going down stairs
  • Hearing loss can inattentiveness
  • Vision loss can cause confusion and getting lost or trapped in a familiar surrounding
  • Incontinence could cause frequent accidents in the house. There is several other medical problems that can cause incontinence.
    Senior Dog Dementia

How You Can Help

I also found in my research that you can get your dog a supplement to help with cognitive issues. I put together a list of things that you can do around the house that may help with the dog’s confusion.

  • Try not to change, rearrange your furniture
  • Eliminate clutter and create wider pathways through your house
  • Consider purchasing or building a ramp to help with stairs
  • Learn your dog’s limits when introducing new toys, food, people, or other animals
  • If you do not have a routine already; develop a routine feeding, watering, and walking schedule
  • Keep commands short, simple, and be compassionate; your dog may not remember or understand what you are wanting them to do.
  • Encourage gentle and involved, short play sessions

A Serious Condition

Senior dog DementiaDog dementia is a serious condition. As your pet gets older try to be more aware of your dog’s behavior. There are several different reasons why your pet has a behavior change. Sometimes it could just be that he/she is getting older or it could be several different conditions; including dementia. If your dog seems to be having some of these symptoms take him/her to the vet for an evaluation.

This can be very hard on the owner as well as the dog. When you have had a pet for over 10 years they are part of the family. Your children may have grown up with this dog.

I could not imagine waking up one morning and not remembering where I am at or who I am with. This can happen, your pet. He/she will be scared and not understand what is happening to them.

I hope you and your pet never have to experience dog dementia, but if you do I hope I have given you enough information that you will be able recognize what is happening and get you pet the help he/she needs.

Dress Your Dog – Do Chihuahuas Need Clothes?

Dress you dogIt seems to be a trend to put clothes on your dogs these days, especially chihuahuas. I admit they do look cute in doggie clothes. Do you really need to dress your dog or is it just a trend? I think the answer is yes to both. What do you think?

Clothes Can Be Needed OutsideDress your dog

Chihuahuas originated from Mexico, so they were made to live in warm climates. In the fall and winter it can get pretty cold in some regions. And the lower down to the ground you are the colder it is. Remember, cold air falls and heat rises.

These little guys are just a few inches off the ground, so they will get cold. And they do not have a real thick coat; not even the long haired chihuahuas have an enough fur for the lower temperatures. Some type of coat or sweater is needed for those cold days when you take your fur baby out. You may want to consider something waterproof if it rains a lot in your area. If, you live in a climate where it gets really cold you may want to also get a pair of shoes.

In cases like these clothes are a necessity. Even at 40°F, you should be precautious, because your chihuahua to get colder than he/she should be. At 20° F, it can be life threatening for your pet. Please take precaution when taking these dogs out in the winter time.

Inside the House

I think it can also be necessary for your chihuahua to have something to wear Dress your dogaround the house. Some of us keep our house cool. It maybe too cool for your chihuahua. If, you see your pet shivering this is a good indication that he/she is cold. I do not know about you but I do not like to be cold and I assume my chihuahuas do not like it either.

Another option, would be to have a blanket for them to snuggle up in. Chihuahuas love a good warm blanket to burrow down in and sleep. But if you have a younger more active chihuahua that will be up running around playing, I would consider some light clothing to help keep the chill away. They may be active but I would still make sure that they are staying warm as they play.

Just For Fun

Some chihuahuas get use to wearing clothes and some never get used to it. If, you have one that does not seem to mind wearing clothes, then I do not see anything dress your dogwrong with dressing them up for the fun of it. And it can be fun to pick out cute things to put on these small dogs. If the dog does not seem to mind it or likes a new outfit, then no harm is done and enjoy your chihuahua.

I know putting clothes on a dog can be controversal. Especially the small breeds. Some people think that those who do this, see the dog as a toy or a baby doll to dress up. For those of us that have chihuahuas know this is not true and that we love our little fur babies. I look at mine as family.

Are Accessories Needed

As I mentioned earlier some accessories could be need. Dog shoes or boots can come in hand if you live where it gets extremely cold. Dogs feet get cold too. I have watch this happen with my own dogs. Every once in a while we will have a bitter cold morning and you can tell that there little feet are getting cold before they make it back into the house. I have not bought shoes for my pets because we only have an occasional extreme low in my area. But if it got extremely cold more often I guess it would take some time to put boots on the three chihuahuas I have.

Some accessories can be just to make your dog look cute. There are plenty of collar charms, socks, and hats to find if you are just wanting to add to the latest outfit that your dog is wearing. Chihuahuas have their own fashion trends nowadays.

Clothes Can Be A Necessity

I do believe in some cases; like the winter months that small dogs cold use a coat or sweater to help keep their little bodies warm. Dressing up you dog is not always necessary, but that is up to the individual to decide what they want their pet to wear. If you are one of those people that like putting outfits on your pet; in my opinion that your business. I do recommend you consider what the temperature is outside when deciding to dress your dog.

Chihuahua Dog History – Where They Came From

Chihuahua dog historyThere are several theories on where chihuahuas came from. Most people think they came from Mexico from the techichi, some think they are descendants from Europe from the Maltese pocket dog. Chihuahuas favor both dogs to some degree. There has even been DNA test done on the breed to try to find out where they originated from.

What did the DNA Show

Chihuahua dog historyIn 2013, the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden tested chihuahuas along several other breeds to find out where they are from. They proved that the chihuahua does share a DNA type unique to the Mexican pre-Columbian samples of the techichi.

This is a small desert dog that dates back to the Mayan period. Techichi were larger than today’s chihuahua. The two look similar but the techichi weight range was between 10 and 20 pounds.

In the US

These dogs were brought into the US when people went through Chihuahua, Chihuahua dog historyMexico. They would buy these small dogs and bring them back with them. Which led to some of the other names that chihuahuas have been known as; Arizona dog, Texas dog, Mexico dog or Chihuahua dog. Finally, they end up calling the breed Chihuahua after the state in Mexico.

The first chihuahua was registered in the US in 1904 into the AKC. The number of chihuahuas registered has to continue to grow. After a Taco Bell commercial in 1997, the breeds popularity soared putting them in the ten most popular breeds for several years. They are not as popular today as they were in the nineties but they are still a very popular breed.

Long Haired and Smooth

Chihuahua dog hisstoryAs far as genetic make up they are the same. I could not find any theories why some have long hair and some have short hair. I do find it interesting that you can have both short and long hair puppies come from the same litter. There has also been cases that when two parents with the same type hair have puppies with a different hair type.

The short hair or smooth hair is has a rougher texture than the long haired. The long haired sheds less and does not require any more grooming than the smooth hair. You would think the long hair would need more brushing, but it does not. In fact the long hair are softer to the touch than the smooth hair.

Breed Characteristics

Although, some get a lot bigger. These dogs are supposed to be between six to nine inches tall and weigh between three and six pounds. They have a life span between 10 to 18 years, but some live a little longer. They are prone to shivering when cold, excited, or scared.

The shivering is one of the reasons people have a tendency to want to put clothes on them. And in some climates it could be necessary. Mexico has a warmer climate, so chihuahuas adapt better still to the warmer areas.

They are small in size but make up for it with their big personalities. They are affectionate and like to be with their owners as much as possible. This makes them great lapdogs and a good companion. They can be a bit feisty. They do not realize how small they are and need to be trained at a young age not to try to fight with other dogs.Chihuahua dog history

Chihuahuas are also considered an intelligent breed and can be easy to train with positive reinforcement. They also get excited easily. These dogs love to please.

Chihuahuas are not usually recommend for homes with young children; due to their size. Personally, I think this should be left up to the individual. You know when you get a chihuahua that it is going to be small; and if you can teach your child and the dog how to play in a way the dog does not get hurt then everyone is happy.

My chihuahuas have been around small children most of their life. I have always stayed aware of where the children are and make sure they know how to pet my dogs. So far I have not had a problem with one of my chihuahuas getting hurt by a small child. I know it happens, but I think it is up to the adults to make sure it does not happen.

My Opinion

In my opinion chihuahuas came from Mexico. They were brought to the US when Americans came through Chihuahua, Mexico. These dogs can be very affectionate and loving. Most people that have them, fall in love with the breed and prefer them over other breeds. At least I prefer them over other breeds. I enjoy having a lapdog and a loyal companion.

Dog Safety During Thanksgiving – Just a Reminder

Dog safetyduring thanksgivingNovember is here. Everyone is starting to think about the holiday season that will soon be here. I just wanted to remind everyone about dog safety during thanksgiving. It is easy to forget that our dogs do not always need to eat some of the things we eat. Some of the foods we enjoy can be harmful to our pets.

Harmful Foods

It is always a treat for your dog to get a bite of people food. But some of these foods can cause your dog problems or even death. One of the main foods to keep Dog Safety During Thanksgivingaway from your precious fur baby would be chocolate. Just a small amount of chocolate can cause your dog to have an upset stomach with vomiting and diarrhea.

In larger amounts chocolate can cause seizures, internal bleeding and heart attack. Depending on the size and the breed of the dog will determine how bad of a reacation he/she would have. Please keep your pet away from chocolate.

Turkey skins and turkey bones are another thing that can cause your dog serious problems. Turkey skins are fatty; and is hard for your dog to digest. It can cause upset stomach or pancreatitis.

Cooked turkey bones can splinter and puncture the digestive tract, causing rectal bleeding, or a serious bacterial infection. The bacteria infection is hard to treat and can be fatal. Our dogs seem to love bones, but in realty most bones are not good for them; especially cooked bones. You can buy them a bone from the pet section that would be safe for them to have if you want them to have something to chew on

Some other foods that can be harmful to your dog: onions, raisins, grapes, artificial sweeteners and yeast. Just be aware of what your pet is eating, so you do not have to make an emergency trip to the vet during your time of celebration.

Foods You Can Give Your Dog

Dog Safety during ThanksgivingSome of the foods we eat can be a treat and good for our dog. A lot of people have green beans for Thanksgiving. Green beans are a healthy choose to give your dog as long as there is not a lot of butter in them. You could always cook a small proportion separate for your dog if you want him/her to have something while you eat.

Carrots is another alternative that would be good for your dog. Raw carrots are also good for your dog’s teeth. And they are low in calories, so you do not have to worry about giving a treat that will cause your pet to become overweight.

Sweet potatoes is also good for your dog; if they are cooked right. You would want to bake or steam them.

I hope to have giving you a few ideas of what foods your dog can enjoy during your Thanksgiving.

Extra People in the HouseDog safety during thanksgiving

Having extra people in the house can make some dogs nervous. Especially the smaller breed dog like chihuahuas. It may be best if you have a nervous dog to let him/her stay in a room away from the crowd or in a kennel; if kennel he/she is kennel trained.

If you have a lot of guest that will be going in and out try to make sure your pet does not escape. I know at times my dogs will try to run out the front door when it is open just to get a glimpse of freedom. It is easy for others that do not have indoor pets to accidentally let them out without realizing it.

Be Aware of Decorations

Some plants that we use decorate during the holiday seasons can be toxic to are dogs as well. Some of these plants are: Amaryllis,English ivy, and Jerusalem cherry. All three of these plants can cause upset stomach, diarrhea, drooling or mouth irritation.

Depending on the size of the pet and how much they ingest. These plants can sometimes cause serious side effects such as: coma, kidney failure and convulsions. If you think your pet has eaten one of these plants you should contact your vet or call the poison control center of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at 888-426-4435. (This 24-hour hot line may charge a fee for use.)

It would also be a good idea to keep artificial plants and other holiday decoration out of the reach of your pet. The man made materials can also cause our dogs to have stomach issues.

Have a Safe Holiday

I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful holiday season. Just remember to keep your pets safe, during this time from foods and plants that could cause them to get sick or have more serious problems.

Advantage II Review – Does It Work

Advantage II ReviewI have used several different products on my dog. I have tried home remedies for fleas, different flea shampoos, different brands of flea collars and Advantage II. All of these choice only give temporary relief to your dog from fleas. There is a large variety of flea products on the market today that you can try. I am doing an Advantage II review, because I know it works. I have several dogs and fleas have not been a problem since I started using Advantage.

Rating and Overview

Product: Advantage II

Company: BayerAdvantage II Review

Price:4-Pack $35-$60; 6-Pack $45-$70.

Where you can buy it: pet supply store, vet office, online pet supply stores, and Amazon.

I give Advantage II 5 out of 5 stars.

Where I Have Purchased It

I have bought this product from my local vet. I got a 6-Pack for a medium size dog for 6 months. It cost me $99. They did give me a free tube. So I had seven months worth. This price was high. I will not be going back there unless I run out and need it right away. Which, I do not see that happening; seeing I have an entire month to buy more.

I have also ordered it from 1-800-PetMeds a couple of times. They are pretty good about putting it on sale or having a promotion. And free shipping may be an option.

The other place I bought Advantage from was Amazon. Through my research Amazon is the cheapest place I found so far. They also do free shipping. This is also where I got my pricing for this review.

I always try to shop around for the best deal. I like this product but I also want to get it at a reasonable price.

Pros

  • You only need to apply it once a month
  • It starts to kill fleas on your dog within 12 hours
  • It kills the fleas before they have a chance to lay eggs
  • It also kills fleas inside your home
  • It is safe for dogs as small as three pounds
  • It is safe for puppies after seven weeks old
  • You can get it in 4, 6, or 12 months supply
  • It is waterproof

When you have dogs in the house and they get bring fleas in it can cause a major problem for you. This is one reason I like Advantage II so much. I have all my dogs in the house and while using this product I do not have to worry about how I am going to control fleas getting on my furniture.Advantage II review

Con

  • It has a metal smell to it until it dries
  • It could get expensive if your dogs are in a different weight range
  • Just like any type of treatment a small percentage of dogs can have a bad reaction to it
  • It can get on your furniture and leave a stain if it has not dried yet.

On the Advantage website it says it is fragrance free. I do not agree with this. I always use it early in the day when my dogs will be outside more. This way it has time to dry and the smell does not get on my furniture. I also have to watch one of my chihuahuas. He loves to get under the covers and the smell will get on my sheets if it has not dried yet. So you want to be sure you have time to let dry before applying it.

What Others Think

Most of the reviews I read while doing my research on this product were almost all good, Most people were very satisfied with the product and planned on buying it again. Most people say it worked very well on there pet and did not cause any bad reactions. Most people like how fast it started to work.

Here are the few bad reviews it got. Some people said it did not work on their dogs. Another lady thought her dog was having a bad reaction from it. Another person said the fleas came back within about a week.

As far as fleas coming back. I thought that myself at one time. But I noticed the fleas right after the dog had came back in from outside. I asked the vet about it. He told me it does not prevent fleas from getting on the dog, but it kills them after they are on the dog. This could be one explanation to why the fleas looked like they came back.Advantage II Review

Wrapping It Up

When you have a dog or dogs that live in your home; you need a good flea solution. The solution needs to be good for you and your dog. Advantage II is a good solution for you and your pet. And I love the fact that I do not have to go out and buy something to exterminate my house with. Advantage II takes care of the problem before it becomes a problem. I would recommend this product to anyone that has pets.
